Cristina Branco
(b.1972) is a Portuguese Fado singer.
Originally a Jazz singer, Cristina was intruduced to Amalia Rodrigues Fado by her grandfather at her 18th the birthday.
Firstly, she wanted to be a journalist. Musically speaking, she was more interested in the work of singers like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell. After a brief appearance in a Portuguese TV show, Cristina was invited to go the Netherlands, where she performed her first public concert in 1996.
According to her, she is not a pure Fado singer, but a singer who sings fado. She works closely with her husband, Custodio Castelo, who wrote many of her songs. Her music is accompanied by the typucal Portuguese guitar.
